~Easy Virtue (2008)~
Eugh. Morally depraved. Pro-euthanasia, anti-marriage. Avoid! The ending made me angry, and it was just one of those films that left me with a bad taste in the mouth. *** for the quality of the production, * for the story. 12+ ff

~A Hazard of Hearts~

1980s TV movie, featuring a very young Helena Bonham Carter; with Edward Fox, Diana Rigg, Christopher Plummer, Eileen Atkins, and Anna Massey also making appearances. The romance was sweet, and the hero and heroine were honourable and likeable, but this was just too unbearably cheesy for my taste. It's an 80's telemovie, based on a Barbara Cartland novel - need I say more?! ** YT

~A Little Princess 1986~

If you loved the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett as a child, and was disappointed by the radical departures from the book (and the New Age-y overtones) in the 1995 film, this six-part series from the BBC is for you. This is a very faithful adaptation. The acting is good throughout - I particularly remember Miriam Margoyles as Miss Amelia. . . love the scene where she tells off Miss Minchin. Amelia Shankley, though a little too old for the part, is wonderful as the young heroine, Sara Crewe. Currently not on Youtube (not in English, anyway) though you can watch a sadly poor-quality version on Tudou. ***

Loosely based on F.H. Burnett's children's classic. Takes major liberties with the book, including making Sara several years younger than she was in the book, making Becky black, moving the setting from England to America, changing the era from late-Victorian to WWI, and topping it all off with a Hollywood-ized ending. Still, it's a moving, magical, enjoyable family movie. I wouldn't recommend this for very small children though; there are some scary scenes, and (spoilers) seeing the heroine lose her father could also be very upsetting for younger viewers - I know it would have been for me, if I'd seen this as a 6-year-old! But kids seem to be getting tougher these days. . . I don't know. . . (end of spoilers). Of possible concern to Christian families are several scenes that borrow from Hindu mythology (the film starts off in India). Oh, and it features a rather lovely soundtrack by Patrick Doyle. ***
