Keira Knightley as Eliza Doolittle is not to be. . .

. . . at least according to this article, and this one. John Madden has been confirmed as director for the remake of My Fair Lady.

Photobucket
Carey Mulligan (whom most of you will remember as Kitty from P&P 05) in her most recent film, An Education

I must confess I am a little disappointed. Keira seemed so perfect for the part. . . now, names like Carey Mulligan and. . . Kristen Stewart (!!!) are being tossed up for the part of Eliza. What about Natalie Portman? I think she'd be pretty amazing as Eliza Doolittle. . . probably won't happen though. Carey Mulligan would also be great - wonder if she can sing? Carey reminds me more of a Julie Andrews than an Audrey Hepburn - she'd be a different kind of Eliza than either Keira Knightley or Natalie Portman would have been, but I think she could do really well in the role.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens. . . I'm still very impatient to find out who the new Henry Higgins is, too!!

I agree about Kiera. It's one role I would have loved to see her in.

Kristen Stewart, though??? I've heard that she's being considered for a biopic of a punk rocker from the 70s (Perhaps just punk fan murmurings, so don't quote me!), and I can totally see her doing that, but not Eliza Doolittle!

You're right, Keira Knightley has that Audrey Hepburn look about her. But Julie Andrew made the play popular on Broadway in the same role so... Carey Mulligan has such a sweet face, makes me smile every time I see her! :)

Carey Mulligan was also Ada in Bleak House - one of my favorite characters! :) I do think she is very pretty!

I would absolutely *LOVE* (!!!!!) to see Carey Mulligan!!! Natalie Portman could pull it off. Ok, I have to admit that I was very pleased that they're looking for another Eliza.

But Kristen Stewart....UGH! Oh, please, nooooooo! ;-)

Please let Eliza be Carey Mulligan! I'll also admit that I was rather relieved to see Keira signing off. She could have probably made an okay Cockney flower girl Eliza, but not a very convincing post-transformation Eliza. Anyway, I think it would be more interesting if Eliza were played by a "fresh face" actress like Carey, and one who's British, since the accent is vital to the plot. Just my little opinions there! It's interesting to see what you and the other commentators think! :)

I'm not too sure KK could have pulled off the Cockney Eliza at all! She's far too posh! ;-)

I'm been anxiously looking forward to the new MFL. Apparently haven't been doing a good job keeping up with the tidbits either. KK dropping out doesn't affect me. I like her but am meh overall about her talent.

John Madden as director is totally making me squee. I love his films and, if it's really true that he's directing this remake, well, I'll be the first in line to see it when it comes to theatres.

Supposedly Daniel Day-Lewis is playing Higgins. Although I suppose that could have changed since it's been awhile.
