There's a new mini-trailer of sorts for Emma 2009 on the BBC's website. Click here to see it!
My thoughts: looking at this, I predict that this new adaptation will be on a similar level to Sense and Sensibility 2008. - A good Austen adaptation, but not quite on par with the BBC's recent period drama masterpieces - like North and South and Cranford.
And what on EARTH is up with Emma's proposing to Mr. Knightley?? Mr. Knightley 's proposal to Emma is absolutely adorable - my favourite part of the book!
Well. Go and watch it, then come back and tell me what you think!
EDIT: I've watched the trailer again a couple of times, and it's clear that Emma isn't really proposing to Mr. Knightley. . . however, I'm still a bit concerned about that scene!

I am sooooooo excited about this!
Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma will always be my favorite portrayal, but from this trailer, it looks like Romola Garai will be very feisty and fun, which makes for good variety. Romola's acting in this trailer reminds me of the way she did Gwendolen Harleth, but in a less cruel way (of course!). Come to think of it, Emma and Gwendolen are kind of similar characters in that they're both spoiled, so that kind of explains and justifies Romola's acting here (the little bit we're allowed to see, at least!).
Anyway, it looks good, and Johnny Lee Miller seems all right as Knightley--again from the little we're allowed to see in the trailer.
Thanks so much for this!

Elise,
Thanks for the updates on this film!! A trailer at last - horray!
Just a thought - I don't think Emma was proposing to Mr. Knightly in the trailer. It seemed to me to be the time when she tells him she can't marry him (after he had proposed to her!) because she doesn't want to leave her father all alone. That is what it seemed like to me. (I certainly HOPE they wouldn't have Emma proposing to Mr. Knightly; that would to too terrible for words!)

Hmm. I LOVED Romola. Very very cute. But from what I can tell, I'm not sure that Johnny Lee Miller is going to cut it. And it doesn't seem as "epic" as North and South, as you've pointed out. I think that the Gwenyth Paltrow version will always be my favorite. But I wouldn't be against seeing this one!
And I agree...I don't think that she was proposing in that scene. That would be horrible! ;-)
I am loving JLM as Mr Knightley now, how strange. He's better than I would have expected.
I find this trailer thrilling and I'm actually feeling very comfortable with this cast now. This new Frank Churchill seems to lack striking qualities. We'll have to see, can't wait for it! :)
I'm not sure if this new Emma will
be as good as the other ones but I am really looking forward to it.
As I recall Emma does tell Mr. Knightely that she cannot marry him sometime after he proposes. She feels that in marrying him she would also be abandoning her father.
Oh my.... what a neat picture!!
For some reason when I clicked
on the link I couldn't see the trailer! I will have to look it up on youtube... anyways I just don't like the idea of Emma proposing to Mr.Knightley, but I still hope to watch it! The costumes looks lovely indeed!! Blessings to you dear friend!
Love~ Miss Jen
I couldn't get to it. But I have seen Little Dorrit! LOVED IT!!! Although I think BBC rushed the ending!
I had the same idea as Alyssa about that 'proposal' scene. In general, I think it looks good, though I don't think I'll know how it will measure up to my favorite version (the one with Kate Beckinsale) till I see the whole thing.
