Jazzing up my blog

Young Woman in Boat, by James Jacques-Joseph Tissot -- from ArtMagick.com [Don't you just love the little dog in this picture!]

So, I'm kind of getting bored with my generic blogger blog background. . . any of you have any tips for adding a bit of flair to my blog? Some of you use pre-made blog backgrounds - I've had bit of a look on "The Cutest Blog on the Block" - they've got some gorgeous designs, but somehow, none of them seemed "right" for my blog. You see, I like the paintings and pictures in my posts to take centre stage - colourful, detailed backgrounds may look nice but they might draw attention away from the pictures. I don't want anything too crowded or busy -- very simple but also pretty and elegant is what I'm after, I guess.

Some of you design your own blog backgrounds. How do you do it? What's involved with making your own blog design?

I suppose something quick and easy I could do would be to find a picture and add to my blog title at the top of this page. But first I'd have to find the right picture. . .

Any of you have any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Hello! This is a great picture and the dog does look cute, is it a pug?

I really liked your The Secret Garden post, this is one of my favourite books and the Agnieszka Holland's adaptation is by far the best, in my opinion. It's exactly what I imagined Secret Garden looked like.

I like your "plain" background, being a big fan of plain backgrounds. Great blog.

Have a good day. Polly

Hi Polly! Hm, I have no idea whether it's a pug or not. I'm assuming it is! I don't know my dog breeds very well, LOL!

Glad you enjoyed my post about the Secret Garden. ;-)

At the moment I have to say I'm leaning towards just keeping my blog background the way it is. If I find a painting/picture that I really like, I might add it to my blog title background. :-)

Jessica McDonald redid her own blog background, she might could help you out.

I just had one of my blogs redone by http://deepsouthblogdesigns.blogspot.com

They also have a sister site: http://girlsjustwannahaveblogs.blogspot.com

They're working on providing sets for free and for sale (at a reasonable price). While they don't offer many different designs at the moment, being fairly new, they do good stuff, so you might want to keep an eye on what they're doing.

Another great blog designer (she does charge for her work, but it's great designs and she works with what you want) is: http://aponderingheart.com/boutique/

In the mean time, and you may have done this (I've not been reading your blog very long), you can try changing colors within the Minima blog template (I assume that's what you're using). Doing that and finding a print you like for your header could be all the change you want.

Hope this helps. :-)

If you go to "The cutest blog on the block" and click on "blog secrets", (located on the sidebar) There are directions on how to make your own blog background. You do however, have to have photoshop or a like program.

Also, I have found several other sites that make blog back grounds, though not all of them are free.

The following are some of my favorite:

The only thing I will say is I agree with you explicitly. The beautiful pictures and paintings must not have anything to distract them or hide them from showing off. But I am sure there is something out there and I will be interested in what you come up with in your quest.

Ana, Hannah Jane, Cathy - thankyou for your thoughts! Thanks for the links, too. :-)

Ana - yes, I might try experimenting a little with the Minima blog background and see what I can come up with. I'll see how I go!
